Types of Braces
Modern orthodontics offers more types of braces than ever before. We are proud to offer some of them in Jacksonville and St. Augustine at St. Johns Orthodontics.
These affordable braces, popular among Jacksonville and St. Augustine dental patients, consist of the traditional metal wires and brackets that many think of when they hear the word “braces.” They are the most common type of braces.
Fortunately, today’s metal braces are noticeably smaller and more comfortable. Plus, you have the option of adding colored rubber bands or elastics for a fun, unique smile. As for the efficiency, the arch wires are heat-activated, moving teeth quickly and with less pain as they respond to the body’s heat.
Ceramic braces consist of the traditional metal wires and brackets, but are tooth-colored or clear colored. Often, tooth-colored wires are used to keep the treatment even more discreet.
Because it’s less visible on the teeth than metal braces, ceramic braces are ideal for patients concerned with the way braces affect them aesthetically. While it is a more discreet option, it requires more time for oral hygiene, as the braces are bigger and more fragile than their metal counterparts.
Lingual braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but the wires and brackets are attached on the back of the teeth to keep them hidden. This dental appliance will be hard at work straightening your teeth from the inside.
This option, however, makes oral hygiene more difficult to maintain and may take longer than more traditional methods.
